The Being Project 30-Day Challenge

What would happen if every day, for a month, you did something just a bit different, took some action to wake up your life a little and then wrote about it? And, then shared the journey with thousands of others…


Do you think by months’ end, this almost effortless addition to each day might…

  • Dramatically enhance the way you experience life,
  • Create a deeper connection with those who mean most to you,
  • Inspire you to be profoundly more present & truly enjoy each moment,
  • Cultivate new relationships with people you never knew existed,
  • Bring joy to the lives of nearly everyone you come in contact with, and
  • Make every single day a fuller, lighter, more meaningful place to be?

I’ve done it myself and I can tell you the answer, in three simple words – yes, yes, YES!

I’ve experienced how the simplest, single, selfless acts have transformed not just days, but months and years in my own life. I’ve seen the impact on the lives of clients, students, friends, family and even total strangers. And, like my grandmother used to say, “If you shoot for the Sun and end up on the moon, you’ve still left the Earth, haven’t you?” Now, what do you think might happen were you to extend this grand experiment for another 30-days, then another and another…until it simply became the way you live your life? Now, that would be a cool adventure!

So, I’ve decided to do something a bit radical…to launch a grand experiment in optimal living, to lead a journey into “what life can be” and invite 100,000 of my closest friends (and a whole big bunch of people I’ve never met) to come along for the ride!

Maybe the impact will be small and very personal, maybe massive and it’ll radiate out to everyone who interacts with us. Maybe it will profoundly add to not only my life and your life, but the lives of tens, hundreds, thousands…millions. That would be, to quote my five-year old daughter, “pretty rockin!”

Wouldn’t you want to be a part of that journey?! You can, right now, right here, this moment.

Rich, poor, famous or unknown, we all want the same thing and we’re all in this together

Over the years, I’ve shared many thoughts, stories and ideas that have allowed me to get more out of life and focus my energies on what really matters and I keep coming back to a set of fundamental qualities of being that, when I allow myself to work from, consistently rock my world. I’ve found it’s not the big deeds that make the greatest difference, it’s the littlest things done with the greatest importance…every single day.

For a long time, I’ve brainstormed ways to both share what I’ve experienced and also connect people on a far grander scale, so that they might bring these qualities into their days and then share their own experiences and stories. And, on the New Years Day, 2007, the answer literally came to me — The Being Project. It was a complete epiphany!

The concept is simple. To reveal 12 Essential Qualities of Optimal Being that each have the ability to change the way we experience life, explore these qualities and then inspire you to act on them each day and just watch what happens. You are welcome to join in anytime. And, you may already know some or all of these qualities, but chances are you’ve never taken this next step, the one that takes you from knowing them to making them come alive…

It’s not just about learning, connecting and inspiring,
its’ about simple action with a lot of power…

In addition to revealing the 12 essential qualities and sharing my experience bring them to life, I will also ask you to take some action…every day…for the month that follows and, hopefully, far beyond that. This is the 30-day challenge that I am asking you to rise to. So, what is it, then? What will you be asked to do?

Simply, to find a way, every day, to take at least one conscious action motivated by as many of these qualities of optimal being as possible. For example, if the quality is Kindness (and one of them is), I will challenge you to find a way to add a single act of kindness to every day for the next month. Big or small, it doesn’t really matter. It’s more about intention than magnitude.

Then, before you go to bed, I’ll ask you write a few words in a journal, to jot down what you did, how the experience was and observe, over time, how these simple actions begin to dramatically change the way you experience the world. And, if you are inclined, I’ll invite you to share your stories here on this blog as Comments.

It’s that simple. There’s nothing to buy, only something to learn and do...something so simple, yet so fully-endowed with the ability to uplift your life and dramatically impact the world community as a whole. And, you’ll be doing this with a growing worldwide family of Being Project visionaries. Sounds pretty cool, eh?

My greatest hope for this project is not that you’ll begin to “actively seek” ways to live these qualities. It’s that, through repetition over 30 days, these qualities of optimal being will simply become a part of who you are and how you live. They will become effortless! Woven into the fabric of your very being.

Can you imagine the impact? 30 days of consciously bringing selfless, transformative qualities to the way you live your life! How incredibly powerful might this be? Even if you don’t yet have an inkling, why not give it a try? It’s not going to cost you a thing. What could you possibly have to lose?

 

Yes, Yes, So How Do I begin?

Simple – read the 12 Essential Qualities below, begin to take action and then join in the community at the blog.

To say that any list of qualities that will lead to an optimal life could be complete is just a bit silly. But, still, it’s not too hard to identify a select group of qualities of being that, practiced together, can dramatically change the way your experience your job, relationships, body, mind and life. So, here is a short list of 12 Essential Qualities of Being that have led to some pretty profound change in my life.

I invite you to try them on for size, as many as you care to experience, every day over 30 days and just watch what happens.

  • Be Kind
  • Be Grateful
  • Be Forgiving
  • Be Friendly
  • Be Honest
  • Be Bold
  • Be Compassionate
  • Be Tolerant
  • Be Loving
  • Be Present
  • Be Patient
  • Be Authentic

The list is short and simple, but in the stories, expriences and thoughts that fill the pages of this blog, you’ll come to understand the deeper nuances and power of each. And, then, hopefully, bring them into your own life.

Oh, and one final thing. Why not bring all your friends along for the ride!

    Jonathan,
    What a treat to receive this link in my mailbox. I LOVE your website. I am launching a greeting card line, “Visions From The Soul”. My book, the Art of Being Magnificent…sounds so very similar to your BEING Project. I was thinking of a Being Series of Books…similar to your list.

    What you are underaking is an ambitious project but it can be done. The underlying factor in all of these is to treat each one (I mean each one) the way you want to be treated and the way we treat people stems from their dignity as human beings and as such deserve all respect they deserve. One of the things that I have read and have applied to myself is “…get used to saying no…” initially it seems selfish but looking at it in a positive way it can be seen as saying no to those habits/vices that make us a selfish person or a self-centered person, etc.

    If everyone just thought of the others first before themselves (in all things) we would be living in a better place but it starts with oneself.

    This is a copy of Benjamin Franklin’s 13 virtues…
    ” There is nothing new under the sun”

    Out of these four resolutions, Franklin came up with a set of thirteen virtues, which he practiced methodically. He wrote each of the virtues down in a book and practiced one of the virtues for a week, trying to perfect it. At the end of the week, he would evaluate his performance. At the end of thirteen weeks, he would start back on the first virtue again.
