I devour books, mostly on lifestyles, business, leadership and marketing.
But, there’s a problem with my habit…
The world of potential books on the topic is huge, but collection of books I’d treasure is infinitely smaller. Which is why I was so excited to connect with Todd Sattersen, president of 800-CEO-READ and co-author of the new book, The 100 Best Business Books of All Time at the South By Southwest festival in Austin last week.
Well, actually, I was excited on two levels.
- Todd is a real thought leader in the business book retailing industry, and
- He and 800-CEO-READ founder, Jack Covert, have written a book that is about to make my life a whole lot more enjoyable and easier.
How will The 100 Best Business Books of All Time make my life easier?
In Career Renegade, I talk about the massive value of aggregating and filtering great content. We are hit with so much information from so many directions these days, it’s possible to spend far more time just filtering what to read than actually reading. And, even then, you often don’t know if something’s worth the read until you’re halfway through it.
So, when someone else steps up and tells you what to read…it’s a life-saver!
The 100 Best Business Books of All Time will literally save me hundreds of hours in time that I now don’t have to spend finding the best of the best. Todd and Jack have already done it. And, beyond filtering and aggregating these great titles, they also added value to the process.
The book is split into the following categories:
- Sales and Marketing
- Rules and Scorekeeping
- Innovation and Creativity
- Big Ideas
What you notice right away, is that this book shares, reviews and comments on 100 other books that cover not just a wide array of business-oriented topics, but also a healthy dose of bigger picture/lifestyle concepts.
So, you’ll find epic’s from the world of applied positive psychology, like Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi’s classic Flow alongside management tomes like The Essential Drucker. I love this approach, because I see business, careers and lifestyles as joyously intertwined (done right).
And, similar the the Drive By Reviews™ I do over at Awake@TheWheel, each review delivers maximum impact in minimal time, following a “What They Say, Why They Matter and How They Can Help You” approach.
Now, of course, any book review worth anything has to also point out what could be done better. And, here’s where I’ve discovered a gaping void…my book’s not in the top 100! What the?!
Oh, wait a minute, mine wasn’t even out yet when theirs went to print. Okay, so they get a pass…this time!
Final thoughts – The 100 Best Business Books of All Time is a tremendous resource for those looking to spend most of their time reading great books, rather than trying to figure out which books are great enough to read
