I am nearly 70, writing and running. One Marathon a year motivates me to stay on the road. The choice is fitness or fatness. I walk the line.

Today in the news: hypertension may be a leading cause of alzheimer's. Want to stay young? Keep working out. Best way for your heart, lungs, legs, mind? Hit the road!

I really like your idea about videoing what you like to do while you're doing your post. It's very unconventional and natural too. Please keep it up!

Not familiar with the book recommended by the first commenter, but I will definitely check it out, thanks. I am a couple years shy of 40, but have come up against this issue too. For me, the question was how I could maximize my day-to-day functional strength. In my 20's I was a gym rat, but to be honest, was sore or injured all the time.

Now that I am married with three infant babies, my goal is to be strong and flexible while maintaining energy levels so that I can be prepared for the children. Time is also at a premium for me.

For me the answers have been Yoga augmented with Hindu Squats and Hindu pushups. You can Wiki the Squats and pushups but everything I've learned in the past two years on that has been by following Matt Furey and purchasing some of his products like Combat Conditioning.

Yoga helps tremendously with my functional strength and the deep breathing helps with anxiety issues I have. All in all, I can whip out a great workout faster than I could drive to the gym, and I don't need any special equipment.

Jonathan,

I think this is excellent. About a year ago I started improving my diet; baby steps over the course of an entire year have left me with a diet that now has little resemblance to what it was previously.

And then in 2009 I started getting more interested in fitness and have taken roughly the same approach.

I read the book 'Body by Science' about 2 months ago and that has influenced my workout in a big way.

I would recommend taking a look at it if you have a chance. The author, Doug McGruff, also has some great videos up on YouTube.

I like the concept of your framework a lot, especially how you describe it here. I think Body by Science is great when it comes to, very specifically, exercise. But recreation, peace of mind, etc. are also important components of health & wellness.

Looking forward to more!
