Critical Mass

criticalmass

There’s a turning point where the glorious beast starts to feed on it’s own momentum…

It’s called the hitting critical mass.

Answers.com defines that point as:

  1. The smallest mass of a fissionable material that will sustain a nuclear chain reaction at a constant level.
  2. The amount of matter needed to generate sufficient gravitational force to halt the current expansion of the universe.
  3. An amount or level needed for a specific result or new action to occur: “The sudden national uproar over drugs and drug abuse has reached politically critical mass in Washington” (Tom Morganthau).

How Do You Really Make Money Writing Books?

Tuesday, October 21st, 2008

It’s amazing how many folks want to write books…

People I’ve known from all walks of life, from bowlers to bloggers, seem to share a similar jones. Sometimes, it’s about the love of writing, creating, expressing, influencing. Sometimes it’s about legacy, the desire to teach, share or guide or just straight up ego. Other times, it’s all about business, making money, either directly from the book or indirectly from where the book leads. For me, admittedly, it’s a combination of all of the above.

Why does it matter?

Can One Word Get You Slapped Or Hugged?

Monday, August 18th, 2008

It was so subtle, I almost missed it…

But, still, it was right there. Lingering. Making my daughter feel worse about herself, without her really getting why.

A few minutes earlier, she’d been deep into the process of creation, her friend at her side. Two 7-year old girls drawing, decorating, pouring their hearts onto paper and pastels. Pronouncing she was done, my daughter turned to her friend, looking for approval.  But, what came out of her friend’s mouth was…

“Actually, that’s really pretty.”

7 Questions With Leo Babauta and Glen Stansberry About Their e-Publishing Venture–Web Warrior Tools

How’d you like to find the coolest, insanely-useful e-books in one place?

Even better, how’d you like to publish your own then have it go viral?

Last week, uber-bloggers and all-around nice guys, Leo Babauta of ZenHabits and Glen Stansberry of LifeDev and LifeRemix launched a new e-book publishing venture called Web Warrior Tools (WWT). The interface is beautiful, but with so many other e-books and publishers out there, I wanted to know what was so different about WWT and how it came to life. So I asked Leo and Glen and here’s what I discovered…

Cover design and voting contest suspended, lesson learned

Sunday, March 9th, 2008

Just hours ago, I announced a contest to vote for and, if desired, even design the cover of my book due out next year. This contest had been suspended, please do not submit designs.

Here is why…

My sole goal in creating this contest was to take a creative process that was usually reserved for a small number of in-house designers and open it up to anyone else who wanted an opportunity to let their creative talents be considered for the cover of a book. And, I wanted people to be able to have a voice in then choosing what covers most appealed to them.

[UPDATE: This contest had been suspended, please do not submit designs. Here is why...

I genuinely thought it was a nice thing. Designers would get exposure through the public display and voting process and everyone could have a voice.
