We were 20 feet off the ground, suspended among the treetops in a dense forest in Western Massachusetts.
My little girl looked up. “Daddy,” she said, “I’m scared…”
She just turned 8, so I wasn’t surprised. What did surprise me, though, was that 30-minutes and 6 stations into her first ever high-ropes course, this was the first time she voiced her fear. She’d pretty much flown through every challenge, scampering across wire bridges, floating block ladders and navigating itty bitty platforms wrapped around trees high above the earth without a hint of hesitation.
Are You Asking the Wrong Questions?
Wednesday, May 13th, 2009When I was down in Austin for SXSW back in March, I had the privilege of being interviewed for a very cool indy film called Life In Perpetual Beta, produced and directed by blogger, mom and all-around cool person, Melissa Pierce.
While the movie is still in production, Melissa’s been doing the very 2.0 thing and posting interview segments on the movie’s blog, so people can participate in the entire process. And, guess what…she just posted a decent chunk of mine. So, I thought I’d share it with you guys here, because toward the end, I answer that age old question - Are you asking the wrong questions?
Life’s What Happens When You’re Busy Making Tweets
Tuesday, April 14th, 2009
There’s a classic John Lennon line that goes…
Life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans
I Sometimes wonder if that applies equally to the brave new world of social media, twitter, facebook and beyond. Comes a point where talking about what’s going on in the world, even with great people, supplants participating in what’s going on in the world.
And, no doubt, while I love the connection that certain technologies like twitter, Facebook and social media afford me, I’m also increasingly aware of it’s ability to become not only a time-sink…but a life sink.
Can Killer Systems Make Up For Lack of Passion Or Vision?
Thursday, September 18th, 2008
It’s the ultimate dream for so many, to create a set-it-and-forget-it business.
Set up the systems, walk away and rake in the cash, while you’re off playing with your kids on the beaches of Punta Cana. Sounds nice, right?. This very business model has been touted for decades by many business and entrepreneurship gurus. And, it’s sold billions of dollars of info-products and trainings online.
But, I wonder if the set-it-and-forget strategy has dirty little secret?
That being…it might not work.
How To Make Someone Love What You Love
Friday, August 1st, 2008
How do you make someone else passionate about something you love…when they really just don’t care?
This was the fundamental question asked by Robert Scoble over at Scobleizer this week in his post entitled The Passionates vs. The Non-Passionates. I added a longish comment there, but the question has been incubating in my head for most of the week.
Scoble was talking largely about the tech-world, where there are usually a small number of early adopters who are passionate about both using and evangelizing a new “something.” And, he said, certain businesses can survive with a small, but devoted group of users.
What If There Were A Secret Internet For Kids?
Tuesday, July 29th, 2008So, my friend and social media maven, Kristen Munson, has a series called Social media Dads on her blog, SocialMediaMom.com. And, she asked me to share a few thoughts on what’s it’s like to be a dad in a highly-wired (that’s connected, not frazzled) world. So, I put together a fun post that begins like this…
I’ve always had this deep desire to show my 7-year old daughter, Jesse, just how interconnected we are to others around the world. Living in NYC has made the task quite a bit easier. It seems at some point, someone from nearly every culture ends up here. And we get to meet them.
Rather Be Dead Than Disabled?
Wednesday, July 16th, 2008If you’re American, 52% of you said yes…
This was the news released in a recent survey commissioned by Disaboom.com. There’s a very insightful breakdown the numbers at WhyNotRachel.com. In fact, the wealthier you are, the more likely you are to choose death.
Much earlier in life, I might have answered the question the same way.
But, then, two things happened that changed my world and, in turn, my understanding of the issue.
Think And Grow Hair
Wednesday, July 9th, 2008
A few months back, I posted about a fascinating bit of research that revealed you can literally “think” yourself stronger.
What I didn’t share was that post was just one stop in a years-long fascination with the power of the mind and, especially, the placebo effect.
I get the potential mechanism for strengthening muscles through visualized exercise, but I’ve recently stumbled upon a discovery that blew me away…
Certain people can actually think their way into stopping hair loss and regrowing hair.
No, this is not some wacky scam to sell the latest hair-growth product (mind you, the wheels are certainly spinning…Guthy-Renker, call me!).
Why My 7 Year Old Can Out-negotiate Half The Lawyers In NY
Monday, June 30th, 2008
So, I am driving my daughter to a friend’s house and she says something that makes me realize kids are a absolute masters in the art of marketing and persuasion.
It was all in the way she framed what she said.
“Daddy,” she shared, “ice cream got on the seat.” Until that moment, I never knew ice cream actually had the ability to do anything. Now I learn it not only has the power to be eaten, but to jump up and get onto things.
Who Else Wants To Rule The World?
Tuesday, June 24th, 2008I have to confess to having a soft-spot for stories and people who are driven to give of themselves in an effort to not only make their own lives come alive, but change the world along the way.
But, I am also pretty short on time, so when people ask me to read and recommend e-books, I usually take a pass. But, when The Art Of Nonconformity blogger, Chris Guillebeau, asked me to take a look at his new manifesto on world domination, I was quickly drawn in by both his very compelling personal story and his approach to life.
