I recently finished reading a book that blew me away, called Mindset: The New Psychology of Success.
Unlike so many other books that have the words “mindset” and “success” in the title, this was a serious book that steered clear of pop psychology and soundbites and offered a simple, yet astonishingly empowering concept that will forever change the way I approach challenges…and teach my daughter to do the same.
It’s not based not on abstract metaphysics, but on hardcore research conducted by the author, Stanford University Professor and acclaimed developmental psychology researcher, Carol Dweck, Ph.D. The fundamental idea was that, from the time we are little kids, we approach challenge with one of two mindsets:
Give Me a Break: Are You Busy For a Reason?
Tuesday, May 19th, 2009
I see it all around me. And, yeah, lately, I’ve fallen prey to it, myself…
I’m the guy who’s usually insanely effective at focusing in on what I want, plotting a course, then doing anything and everything to make it happen. I’m “That Renegade Guy.” Got a cape and everything.
So, I’ve been wondering “what’s up with me?” lately.
Damned if it doesn’t suck just a little bit when you’re confronted with your own humanity and fallibility. Turns out, I’m great at giving everyone else a break…not so good when it comes to me.
Working From Home: 10 Unconscious Cues to Create a Work-Life Balance
Monday, May 18th, 2009
[Guest post from Wisebread.com's Lynn Truong, co-author of 10,001 Ways to Live Large on a Small Budget]
Working from home sounds like a very simple concept. But there are a lot of built-in structures and boundaries inherent in a going-to-the-office job that we often take for granted. Recreating those boundaries when our home and work is one and the same is a crucial part of achieving a work-life balance.
The personal battle
How Do You Handle Change In The First 30 Days?
Tuesday, May 12th, 2009
When I first heard about the book, The First 30 Days, by Ariane de Bonvoisin, I was intrigued…
Maybe it was due to my longstanding interest in Buddhism or because the central message resonates so closely with one of my favorite books, Comfortable With Uncertainty by Pema Chodron.
Fact is, about the only thing we know for sure is that life is uncertain.
Change is a regular part of the process. Sometimes we see it coming and embrace what it’s bringing. Other times, we’re blindsided and hope desperately to sidestep it’s impact.
Nobody Completes You
Tuesday, April 7th, 2009
It was an iconic moment…
Jerry McGuire, played by Tom cruise, walks into a room full of women and professes his love to Dorothy Boyd, played by Rene Zellweger, saying, “you complete me.” Dorothy, in tears, walks into his arms as she reveals, “you had me at hello,” while the audience stands, claps madly and cheers triumphantly.
It was a magic moment. Too bad it was based on a lie…
Careers Gone Bad: Your Money Or Your Life?
Monday, January 12th, 2009We all want the best for ourselves, our families and, if you’ve got ‘em, your kids…
We work like crazy to provide opportunity, to succeed. Problem is, it may all be based on a lie. I’ve just published a fairly gigantic post over on CareerRenegade.com called Dead Man Working.
Here’s a short excerpt:
Outing The Joneses—it ain’t about money
Something has gone horribly wrong in this massively pervasive quest to keep up with and, whenever possible, whup the Joneses. We’ve ended up, getting everything we wanted, but we didn’t feel like we thought we’d feel. Then, for some of you, in the blink of an eye, or the pink of a slip, it was all taken away.
ZenHabits’ Leo Babauta Talks About The Power Of Less
Monday, December 22nd, 2008
It’s not often you get a chance to grill someone you admire…
Let alone, a married father of six, newspaper columnist turned speechwriter turned blogger, author..and marathoner. So, when I learned Leo Babauta of ZenHabits fame had a new book coming out, I jumped on the opportunity.
You can dive into our conversation below.
And, if you’re looking to simplify, reconnect with what really matters in life and carve out more time to do what you love with the people you love, you’ll definitely want to grab a copy of The Power of Less, The: The Fine Art of Limiting Yourself to the Essential…in Business and in Life right away!
You Know, I really HATE to say this…

Thanksgiving: The Ultimate Mindset Reset Button
Thursday, November 27th, 2008
Here’s why I love thanksgiving…
It forces you to stop, even if for a moment, and honor what’s right in your life.
Driving into my yoga studio yesterday, I was listening to NPR (again, because I’m officially a fuddy, duddy now) and there was segment where people called in and shared what they were thankful for.
One person called in and said they were thankful for surgery that cured them of colon cancer. Another was thankful that, after 5 years, she found the will to forgive her mother for decades of abuse, growing up in an achoholic home. Yet another shared her gratitude for the fact that her husband was laid off 6 months ago, because that gave him the window to launch a business he’d always dreamed of that’s now doing great.
Friends Secretly Hope You Fail?
Tuesday, November 4th, 2008
Here’s some news that’s bound to be a bit disconcerting…people close to you secretly want you to fail.
They wish they didn’t feel this way and they feel terrible about it, but still, they can’t help covertly leaning into the desire to witness your downfall. And, if you’ve been on the “wishing for failure” side of the relationship, you’re not alone.
Picture this…
You’re a freshman in college, very much single, a bit on the dorky-side, but in a loveable way and, even so, oddly gifted at dancing. One Friday night, you go to a big quad-party with your friend, Maurice. No, he’s not imaginary. Through a barbeque-hazed crowd, both of your eyes land on an incredibly attractive “out of your league” sorority girl.
